Environmental conditions:
The Olsztyn-Mazury Airport is located within the limits of the youngest form of nature protection in the Natura 2000 area (Napiwodzko-Ramucki Forect), which proves the uniqueness of the place and the obligation to care for the natural environment.
A report was prepared in accordance with the principle of environmental impact assessment for the expansion of the airport. It included the forecasted impact of the planned project on the components of the natural environment. As a result of the assessment, the Warmia and Mazury company obtained a decision on environmental which identified, inter alia, significant conditions to prevent, reduce and monitor environmental impact during the implementation and operation of the airport. This allowed for maintaining consistency and limiting the negative impact to a minimum, remembering the principle of sustainable development, foresight and prevention.
Taken actions:
During the expansion and operation of the airport, a number of minimizing and compensating measures in the field of active protection were applied: assembly of breeding boxes for birds and bats, shaping of feeding habitats for white storks, birds of prey and other species in designated areas.
Environmental control program:
The animal risk management program was developed and implemented in accordance with the recommendations of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), considering the local environmental conditions of the airport. It includes, inter alia, ornithological monitoring at the airport and in the Air Operations Safety Zone, reporting the state of the environment (log of animal activity at the airport), using of proactive methods (habitat management) and reactive methods (disturbance of birds). In particular, the managing body of the Olsztyn-Mazury ensures that the implementation of the program complies with legal regulations in the field of environmental protection. The Olsztyn-Mazury Airport is open to cooperation with external institutions to promote and care for the natural environment.
Air traffic safety around the airport:
At the same time, the Olsztyn-Mazury Airport informs that pursuant to article 87 (6) of the Aviation Law (the Journal of Laws, 2018.1183):
The following is forbidden within the surrounding of the airport, i.e. up to 5 km from its border:
1) construction or extension of building structures that can be a source of feeding for birds;
2) breeding birds that can threat air traffic.
